Jury awards $21.3 million to Indy man injured in garage door accident

Recently in Indianapolis, Indiana an electrical worker is now paralyzed from the chest down due to a
negligent inspection and/or servicing on a garage door opener that opened on him causing the door to pin him between the door itself and the roof of the building.  Sometime later after being suspended in the air the motor failed causing the door to drop and in turn also drop the man fourteen feet landing head first causing the ailment.
Entrusting your garage door to inexperience personnel can make matters worse from the get-go.  Most people do not know what they’re doing nor have a general safe idea.  One wrong snip of a wire can render an expensive opener obsolete.  Or the cutting of a cable can cause a 500lb door to come crashing down.  We’ve always went be the mantra “Don’t word hard, work smart”.  Then with winding a spring if you’re not well accounted with that task, it is possible for extremities to be injured or lost.  There has been incident’s where inexperience personnel have lost fingers and hands due to improper spring installation.  There about about 50 different sized of springs and each is designed to be wound to a certain specification.  Over tightening a spring can cause it to snap with all that built up tension, it can be a very scary 1 second.
It’s always going to be best to leave this task up to the qualified well seasoned professionals.  An injured technicians is a big can of worms that that can be avoided if the proper precautions are taken.  DIY garage door repair can be one of those “bit off more than you can chew” moments.  Watching a professional perform the service on YouTube is a whole entirely different view than having it in front and doing it yourself.   Putting your faith in the hands of the professionals will be a very wise investment in the long run.
